With a total area of 55,000 square kilometres, this is the largest African reserve. The main element is the water which distinguishes it from all the other parks in Tanzania.
Selous is crossed by the Rufiji River. Besides the traditional safaris in jeeps, the reserve boasts a strong tradition in boating safaris. Crocodile and hippopotamus sightings are frequent, and there are a large number of birds along the river banks. It is not unusual, moreover, to find groups of elephants in the water. As it is the reserve nearest to the islands, it is the ideal destination for those who wish to go on a short safari combined with a beach holiday. Domestic flights from Dar and Zanzibar.
