The Climate

The Climate

The climate in Tanzania is tropical and there is not much difference between winter and summer temperatures (seasons are the opposite of what they are in Italy.). Average temperatures range from 20 to 30 degrees, higher in the coastal areas and Zanzibar, while lower in the mountains. On Mount Kilimanjaro temperatures can even drop as low as zero degrees.

There aretwo dry seasons: the driest period is winter between May and October, which is the most bearable time of the year. January and February are also quite rainy months.

The main rainy periods, however, are between December and April in the south, and between October and December and March and April in the north. The climate in this period is more humid and hotter.
When to go

When to go

Dry and rainy seasons interchange during the year.

There are two dry seasons: from the end of December to the end of March, a period with the highest temperatures but interspersed with occasional pleasant rainfalls; and from June to the end of October, which is overall the driest season of the year.

There are two rainy seasons: the short rainy season from the middle of November to the beginning of December, which is characterised by innocuous and sporadic downpours, and a much longer rainy season from the end of March to the beginning of June.

Vaccinations

Vaccination against yellow fever is no more required of European tourists, but the antimalarial prophylaxis is recommended, especially in certain periods of the year. Although there are very low odds of contracting malaria, it is advisable to refer to your family doctor before departure.
Telephony and time zone

Telephony and time zone

GMT + 3: two hours ahead of the Italian Winter Time; one hour ahead of the Italian Summer Time.

In Tanzania the standard voltage is 220-240 V. The power plugs are British type with three pins forming a triangle. In order to use the Italian type plugs, you need an adaptor which you can buy in specialised shops in Italy or at airports. The code to call Italy from Tanzania is +39, while the code to call Tanzania from Italy is +255.
Insurance policies

Insurance policies

Our holiday packages include the AMREF Flying Doctors insurance which provides medical evacuation by means of an air ambulance service to Nairobi hospitals, the best in the whole of eastern Africa. We recommend supplementing the AMREF Flying Doctors insurance with another medical insurance that also includes luggage and travel insurance.
Clothing

Clothing

We recommend a big light non-rigid practical bag, avoiding any kind of hard luggage if possible. Having different layers of clothing is the best way of coping with the wide temperature variation between day and night. Neutral colours are recommended for the Safari as dark colours attract insects.

How much does a safari cost

How much does a safari cost

The final price of a Safari tour depends on many factors, especially on:

  • The length of the trip.
  • The number of parks you decide to visit. Entrance fees vary from 60 to 90 USD per person per day. For example, in addition to the 70/80 USD per person per day to enter the Ngorongoro Conservation

Area, there is also the cost of 300 USD for the jeep.

  • Type of accommodation: a three star lodge/tented camp will obviously have a different price from a five star lodge/tented luxury camp. Lodge/tented camp locations also have different prices (outside or inside the park).
  • Domestic flights to travel from one park to another allow you to save time but impact on the price.
  • Number of participants: the more you are the less you spend: two people will pay the full price, while a group of 4-5 people can have a 15%-20% discount on the final price.
  • The period: Christmas time, Easter, and the month of August are considered high season.
  • Whether you choose to rent a safari jeep for your own personal use or whether you opt for an everyday full board option.
Basically, the cost per person per day for a Safari holiday varies from approximately 350 USD in a lodge/tented camp to a 700/800 USD or more in a luxury tented camp.
